Coordinator, Advocacy Core Group
Edo State.
The Edo State coordinator of the ACG, Dr. Jude Obasanmi noted that the group was able to assemble members from the eighteen Local Government Areas of the state, Christian and Muslim leaders and its development partner, "The Change Initiative", (TCI) to attend the meeting.
Dr. Obasanmi who is also the Chief Responsibility Officer of Josemaria Escriva Foundation, disclosed that the group is focused on how to engage government to increase budgetary allocation to government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) that have responsibilities to the youths and younger persons in the state.
"Our mandate is how to get government attention to create enabling environment for reproductive health and family planning activities in the state and see how government can increase subventions to the relevant government agencies that have something to do with reproductive health."
Obasanmi who said after reviewing the ACG activities in the past realised the group has made modest success like co-opting some influencial members of the public as champions into their activities with a view to assisting them in public enlightenment on the essence of reproductive health.
"We realised that we were able to contact some champions, health champions who will be able to talk to the people about reproductive health. We have been able to reach out to traditional rulers and some others on how they can lend their voice to the issue of reproductive health."
While enumerating the esence of the ACG awareness campaign on reproductive health issues, Obasanmi said: "if you look at the number of unwanted pregnancies, the number of cases of abortion, death, diseases; you'll realise that most of these are coming up because of failure of on the part of individuals to have better knowledge of reproductive health, not just that government.
So, for us, we decided to take the message to them, to let them know the consequencies of not having healthy reproductive health, increase their consciousness that when they know more about reproductive health, they will live healthier life.
According to Obasanmi, the issue of the World Contraceptives Day was also discussed and resolutions taken on how to host different activities to mark the occasion in all the eighteen Local Government Areas of the state.
Amazing job, more strength to continue the good work.
