A Presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general elections, Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa has said that Nigerian voters will avoid money bag politicians and those who use public funds to bribe people and elect credible persons.
candidates advised eligible voters in Nigeria not to elect people who use public funds to bribe people and put them into public office.
He warned that if individuals whose sources of wealth are questionable emerge as leaders, it may enthrone 'corrupt and unaccountable leaders' who will not only to pillage the nation's resources and continue to promote corruption, but further impoverish Nigerians.
He disclosed this while fielding questions from journalists at the sidelines of his visit to the Benin monarch, His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II on Wednesday, 18 May in Benin City, the Edo State Capital where the Abia State born politician highlighted his 'New Nigeria group' project for the nation.
Ohuabunwa urged delegates to the forthcoming PDP primary election to put aside sentiments and elect him as the candidate of the party by considering his depth, ideology, experience and competencies in order to eradicate the pervasive economic hardship in Nigeria.
According to him, "People who use public funds to bribe people put them in office, I thinkthat era is being challenged. I am convinced that Nigerians will listen to ideology, look at the antecedents of the various contestants and do a background check on them in order to be able to make informed choices. What is your competence level? What vision do you have? Do you have integrity? Those who use bullion vans to sponsor elections".
"Thank God for social media and Citizens' journalism. People are now much more probing and asking. Money alone cannot solve Nigeria's problems".
"My belief is that Nigerians have seen the evil of corrupt leadership and are beginning to understand that electing a credible leadership is better than those who flaunt money that you cannot quite justify how they came", he noted.
Earlier in his goodwill message, the Benin monarch, His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II, declared that people seeking elective offices do not deserve to be elected or re-elected in view of the prevailing economic downturn in Nigeria.
The traditional ruler, prayed Almighty God and his ancestors to keep Nigeria together and enthrone the right leadership at the various levels of governance in the country.
