Women Group Condemns Murder of Cynthia Ago by Husband.

A women rights advocacy group, Echoes of Women in Africa Initiatives (ECOWA) has condemned the alleged murder of Cynthia Ago by her husband. The women group also condemned the killing of women by their intimate partners and others noting that in 2020, a total of 81,000 women and girls were killed globally adding that 47,000 of them were killed by intimate partners.


In a statement by the founder of Echoes of Women in Africa, Louisa Ekhomun-Agbonkhese lamented that though Nigeria is signatory to several conventions which call for prevention, protection, prosecution of papetrators of Gender Based Violence GBV, the incidences of domestic violence is still prevalent in Edo State and Nigeria at large pointing out that the menance constitute danger to a fruitful family life.

According to the statement, "as a country, Nigeria has signed multiple conventions which call for protection, prevention, investigation, prosecution, punishment and effective remedies to deal with Gender Based Violence that includes domestic violence. 
"At the national level, Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act (VAPPA) has been passed with states domesticating it into law. However, reports of attacks on women and girls continue to make headlines. A nation that is getting engulfed in armed conflict by bandits and terrorists causing deaths of children, women, men and kidnapping of hundreds of thousands in communities on one hand, domestic violence on the other hand is endangering the family unit".

While condemning the killing of women by male partners, the statement equally condemned the killing of men by their female partners, just as it emphasised the serious negative effect domestic violence has on the social, economic, and public health of victims and called for concerted efforts, including awareness creation, strengthening prevention mechanisms to stem the menace.

"Women are battered, threatened, neglected, forcefully ejected and eventually killed for flimsy excuses. Domestic violence is a serious social, economic and public health issue. The impact is difficult to articulate on adults, children, the family and the government.

"There is an urgent need to enhance response, meet the needs of survivors, and strengthen prevention efforts to achieve the goal of ending domestic violence in Edo State and in Nigeria.

"While we condemn the killing of women by male partners, we equally condemned the killing of men by female partners, girlfriends, wives or lovers. The home should not be a dangerous place for women or men".

Edo State Anti- Cultism Taskforce Arrests 11 Suspects, to Face Prosecution

The Edo State Special Anti-Cultism Task Force  on Wednesday in Benin City, the Edo State capital, paraded 11 persons suspected to be involved in cultitism in the State, pointing out that the operation that led to their arrest is giving effect to the attainment of the Edo State guidelines of zero tolerance for cults and cultism  related crimes in the state adding that more would be done within the ambit of the law to stamp out cultism from the state such that there would not be any hiding place for cultists in the state. The taskforce headed by the Department of State Services (DSS) was created by the Governor Obaseki-led state government in response to increasing cult killings which had claimed many youthful lives across the state. Edo 2024: Consensus Christian Leaders Forum Holds Prayer Session

By Lucky Isibor Ahead the Edo State 2024 governorship election, the Consensus Christian Leaders Forum (CCLF) is to hold a prayer session on Saturday, 10 February to seek the face of God to lead Edo people aright to choose a God fearing Governor on 21 September. In a release by the leader of CCLF, Archbishop Fred Aghedo stated that the prayer session with the theme "Where is Edo of our dream", and called on Edo people to join the group in the prayers to seek the face of God and pray for the realisation of the Edo of our dream.
