Edo 2024: I've Not Endorsed Any Aspirant- Abure, Labour Party National Chairman
By Lucky Isibor
Against the backdrop of the high number of individuals eyeing the gubernatorial ticket of Labour Party (LP), ahead the Edo State governorship election due in 2024, the national chairman of the party, Julius Abure (Esq), has assured party faithful and the general public in Edo State that he has not endorsed anyone for the party's gubernatorial ticket assuring that all the party members will decide through the delegates, at the governorship primary to be organised at the appropriate time.
Abure who stated this while briefing newsmen at the end of meetings he held with various organs of the Edo State chapter of the party in Benin City Wednesday, 5 July noted that the party has set machinery in motion to recruit more members into its fold in the state.
While emphasising that Labour Party primaries for the Edo State 2024 governorship election will be competitive, open and transparent, Abure pointed out that machinery has been put in motion to rejig the party starting from the unit level, adding that the doors of the party are open for new entrants and urged those who are dissatisfied with the operational modalities of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC), which he alleged are characterised by lack of internal democracy to come over to Labour Party; assuring them of a level playing field.
"We have taken measures on how to bring more people to join the party. I want to state it here very clearly that the door of the party is opened for new members to come in, those who are dissatisfied with where they are, our doors are open.
"I want to make it categorically clear that I have not endorsed any candidate for Edo 2024 governorship election.
Labour Party primaries that will produce the candidate for next year's Edo governorship election is going to be competitive, it's going to be open, it's going to be transparent.
"Our quarrel over the years with PDP and APC is that they lack internal party democracy which is responsible for the production of leaders who lack the pedigree, competence, and capacity to anchor the affairs of governance which has landed us in the situation we are in in the country today.
"And therefore, as an emerging political party who believe that we should change the political narrative in the country, we cannot be seen doing the same thing; we must learn from the mistakes of other political parties and be able to improve on our operations.
"Several aspirants are emerging in the party and I want to make it categorically clear that I have not endorsed any candidate. Members of Labour party, delegates of Labour Party will be the ones when the primaries come to chose, the person that will be the flag bearer of the party.
"We have decided to work ahead by looking at our structure where we have defects, especially at the unit level, we have set up committees to look at it.
We have also put modalities in place to pursue vigorously membership recruitment and membership drive in the party. The more we have members, the merrier for us and so our doors are open, the party is open for registration and we expressively looked at that aspect yesterday and we have put a committee in place, 'Contact and Mobilization Committee' that will move round and advance our membership drive in the state".
On the party's ongoing presidential election petition at the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal, the Labour Party national chairman have this to say: "We have Marshalled out all our evidences in court and am sure that as you have seen, APC and INEC are struggling on how to open their defence, infact they have opened their defence. I want to say that from what we have seen we are doing very well in the tribunal and am sure that justice will be done at the end of the day. Our stolen mandate will be reclaimed at the level of the court. We told our supporters to remain calm, we believe that we'll get our stolen mandate from the courts".
