The Edo State Commissioner for Environment and Susttainability,  Arc. Joshua Omokhodion, while reacting to the seal off of the illegal dump site, pointed out that when officials of of the ministry discovered that the illegal site was being operated by UBTH, he had to lead officials of the ministry to UBTH to engage the management and staff of the hospital on why the site must be sealed to prevent outbreak of epidemic in the residential estate and other adjoining residential areas.

Sharing his experience with newsmen on the visit to the illegal dump site,  Arc. Omokhodion noted that, "I must be frank with you, I found myself in a situation where you have to balance need with necessity.  You have UBTH that to a large extent needed the dump for their medical  waste and they found that place to some extent convenient for waste and obviously felt the people living in that place will be accommodating to that situation.

"They did all that  and used the authority of the federal government to continue to do that over the years. However, upon the clarion call by the people to His Excellency Governor Godwin Obaseki, upon instruction to the Ministry of Environment, directing the Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability to deal with the situation; we were able to solve the problem that has lingered for the past thirty years. We were there, saw the challenges, saw that it was an obvious bad situation with potential of possible outbreak of an epidemic."

While assuring residents of the estate and Edo people in general that their wellbeing is paramout to the Governor Godwin Obaseki led Edo State government,  Arc. Omokhodion said, "We reached out to the people and they gave us their own side of the story, we reached a conclusion that that place should be a sealed site from any kind of dump. However, what the people were scared of, that UBTH might not give them that cooperation, we had to do a visit to the management and staff of UBTH.

"I am glad to inform you now that the management and staff of UBTH were magnanimous enough to see reasons from our point that it's true that that was going to be a huge health hazard for them to continue to maintain the dump site on that estate, and agreed to seal that site which I think to a large extent show that as a government, ably led by His Exellency, Governor Godwin Obaseki; our response to needs of the people is paramount,  their well being is key to us and this we'll continue to do to enhance the well-being and healthy life of our people.

"We gave ourselves a target that within 48 hours the evacuation should have been  completed", adding that the sited has been sealed and evacuated.
