Leading the environmental sanitation exercise in Benin City, the Edo State Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, Arc Joshua Omokhodion stressed the imperative of a clean environment in the overall health of the people and urged them to always clean up their environment.

The Commissioner who monitored the exercise at Lagos Street, emphasized the need for residents to clean up their environment as a clean environment guarantees good health, adding that a dirty environment breeds disease vectors that lead to poor health conditions.

Edo State Government through the Ministry of Environment and sustainability has continued in the Monday clean-up campaign recently launched to cater for market places and the environment to ensure a healthy atmosphere for its residents.

While monitoring the exercise on Monday, 6 August at Lagos Street, the Commissioner emphasized the need for residents to clean up their environment as a clean environment guarantees good health, adding that a dirty environment breeds disease vectors that lead to poor health conditions.

Omokhodion who commended residents and traders at Lagos Street and environs for complying with the clean up exercise, urged them to continue to participate in the Monday weekly environmental sanitation and not relent in keeping Edo clean as the State Government is committed to improve the health of its citizens.

"it is one of the Governor’s mandate to see that Edo State is one of the cleanest in the nation, therefore, we are telling the people to take responsibility by being actively involved in the MEGA clean up",

Omokhodion further advised against indiscriminate refuse disposal, especially in unauthorized locations, noting that a task force had been put in place to monitor strict compliance with sanitation directives, as anyone caught contravening the law would be arrested and prosecuted adding that the sanitation exercise would be extended to other parts of the State, outside the City centre, until the aim of making Edo an environmental hub is achieved.

The Monday morning market sanitation took place around Oba Market, Lagos street, Ibiwe, Iguisi, Forestry amongst other locations.

The General Manager, Edo State Waste Management Board, Mr. Charles Imarhiagbe, Health Officers from Oredo Local Government Council and members of the Tipper Drivers Association also participated in the exercise.
